Risk engineering internship

Learn what it takes to be a risk engineer within our specialist risk unit, ZRS.

Our risk engineering internship programme

Not available in 2026

Our 10-week internship with Zurich Resilience Solutions (ZRS) - our specialist risk engineering and risk management unit - will give you valuable insight into the role of a risk engineer.

You will have the opportunity to attend site visits with experienced risk engineers, to learn how we support our customers to understand and manage their risks. Working alongside your colleagues will also help you to understand how an effective risk management strategy can bring value to an organisation.

As part of the internship programme, there are different workstreams within ZRS that you will have the opportunity to interact with, such as energy, climate change, property, casualty and operations.

What will I need to apply?

You must have the indefinite, full right to work and reside in the UK. We cannot accept applications from those who require sponsorship to work in the UK. You must also be in your penultimate year of undergraduate study at university.

You’ll also need the following:

  • You must be in your penultimate year of study and on track to receive a minimum 2:1 degree ideally in an Engineering degree such as civil, chemical, mechanical or fire risk
  • At least 96 UCAS points – CCC grades (or equivalent) from 3 A-level subjects
  • A* to C grade (9 to 4) in Maths and English GCSE
  • Full clean UK driving license upon application

What skills will I need?

You’ll need excellent written and verbal communication skills. You'll also need excellent team-working skills and should be highly motivated and articulate. We’re looking for people who are enthusiastic and driven to develop an understanding of our business.

What will I be doing?

Over the course of the 10-week internship programme, you will join a specific team within ZRS and have the opportunity to work on a project. Teams you may work with include:

  • Commercial property surveying – in this role, you would visit a range of sites, such as schools, warehouses, offices, and manufacturing plants, to help them understand and manage their risks including fire, theft, flood and other perils
  • Energy surveying – this role involves assessing and managing risks across industries like mining, power (including renewables), construction, oil, gas and petrochemicals, and heavy industries
  • Climate change resilience services – this role involves helping our customers understand and manage the risks presented by climate change - both now and in the future
  • Operations – this is the vital support function for ZRS and could include working in teams such as data analytics, proposition and vendor management, compliance and governance, and sales.

Depending on the team you are aligned to, your working week could consist of site visits with an experienced risk engineer, conducting research about emerging risks to support underwriters, and reviewing previous risk engineering reports or loss lesson data.

Alongside these activities, the majority of your time will be spent on a project you will undertake with detailed support from the risk engineering team. You will also have a chance to develop wider relationships outside of your team to learn about how the different parts of Zurich collaborate with each other.

What else can I look forward to?

You will gain experience working in an insurance company while receiving support for your own personal and professional development. The role of a risk engineer is rewarding and challenging, as you will be required to use your technical knowledge to write risk reports and create effective risk mitigation strategies for customers. When you finish your internship, you may be considered for a place on the ZRS graduate scheme.
