Our engineering surveyor programme
Not available in 2025
Our engineer surveyors have a varied and exciting role - helping to support our customers in being safe. They also help ensure our customers don't fall foul of the various rules and regulations surrounding the equipment they use.
The role could include surveying an escalator in your local high street store, your favourite coffee shop’s fancy coffee machine, plant equipment on a construction site, or perhaps a boiler heating a primary school full of children. Our engineer surveyors also ensure protective equipment used in workshops defends people working there from illness.
As an engineering surveyor apprentice, you'll be enhancing your existing skills in engineering and developing new ones in the world of engineering inspection and surveying.
About our engineer surveyor apprenticeship
With a Zurich engineer surveyor apprenticeship, you'll work towards a Level 4 engineering surveyor qualification. This meets the requirements of UKAS RG0 and SAFed SS01 for a Category 2 engineer surveyor.
During your apprenticeship, you'll develop:
- Management techniques, including negotiation, influencing, commercial awareness, assertiveness and customer relationship management
- Report-writing and note-taking techniques, including the correct use of Systems International units of abbreviations
- Risk assessment methodology and appropriate control measure knowledge
- Understanding of applicable legislation and standards
- Problem-solving and analysis skills by investigating issues and recommending solutions
- Knowledge of key principles of engineering science, mechanical materials, electrical engineering and more
- Confidence and competence to carry out inspections of engineering equipment in accordance with relevant legislation and standards
- The ability to identify equipment defects - both common and complex - and take action to advise customers of compliant outcomes.
What do I need to apply?
This apprenticeship is designed to support those who already have a background in engineering. You'll therefore need a minimum of a Level 3 engineering qualification. This should include engineering-based maths, science and materials content.
The full entry requirements for our apprenticeships are shown in our job adverts. We ask all candidates to have Level 2 Maths and English (GCSE C/4 and above).
You'll be provided with a company car, so you'll need to be able to drive to various training activities as part of your apprenticeship, as well as eventually to the locations of your portfolio of customers that are within a reasonable travel distance from your home.
Outside of these requirements, you just need a passion for engineering and the ability to demonstrate your strengths as part of the application process.
Where will I be based?
Our engineering surveyor apprentices are typically home-based but you’ll be required to travel for some activities that form part of your training and development, including to Fareham and our engineering laboratory in Steelpark, Wolverhampton.
