Getting to know Michael

What do you do in your role?

I lead a team of 14 investigators who handle a diverse portfolio of casualty fraud claims, protecting customers across large commercial businesses, SMEs and municipal clients.

How has your law degree helped?

I have used personal injury and tort law, alongside logical reasoning, professional writing, critical thinking and confidence in presenting complex issues.

How did you get into insurance?

I joined through a claims handler role advertised via university. My career evolved into management, project responsibilities, industry conferences, customer presentations and a Level 5 Operational Management Apprenticeship.

What might surprise people?

Claims careers are not a straight line. There are roles in AI and digital tools, claims intelligence and fraud, customer relationship management and operations leadership.

What is the standout opportunity?

A standout moment has been presenting at industry conferences and delivering customer presentations to audiences in the thousands. Starting in an entry-level claims role, I would not necessarily have expected my career to lead to opportunities like that. It has shown me how varied a career in claims can be, and how insurance can open the door to leadership, public speaking, customer engagement and industry networking.

What advice would you give students?

Claims is an excellent way to apply legal knowledge in a practical, real-world context while developing communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
