What do you do in your role?

I handle Financial Lines claims for organisations ranging from large corporate companies to local retailers. I manage my own portfolio and work with customers, brokers, solicitors and colleagues.

How has your degree helped?

History developed skills I use every day: reviewing documents, investigating, building a picture, asking the right questions and developing structured arguments for negotiation.

How did you get into insurance?

I had secured a role training as a social worker, but when Covid and lockdown hit I looked closer to home. I wanted technical, challenging work in a sociable team and received an offer from Zurich.

What might surprise people?

Current affairs and news events influence claims and trends. The role blends technical expertise with relationship-building and provides insight into many professions and industries.

What do you enjoy the most?

I value the autonomy and trust to shape my role, supported by colleagues and managers, and the opportunity to keep developing in a technically challenging environment.

What advice would you give students?

There is a niche for everyone. Curiosity, customer-facing experience, teamwork, proactivity and a positive attitude matter more than arriving with extensive insurance knowledge.
