Motor claims guidance

We’re dedicated to helping you understand what to expect when making a car insurance claim. This section provides the information and support you'll need as we endeavour to make your claims experience as collaborative, personal, clear and effortless as possible.

During your claim we may ask you for some or all of the following:

  • Your policy number
  • Details of what happened, where it happened and who was involved
  • Details of any damage (including photos)
  • Details of any emergency services involved or crime reference number (where applicable)
  • Any supporting documentation you have available

Zurich will normally use a network of approved repairers to replace or repair your car or any part of it. Following an accident, you must use a supplier that has been agreed by us before your car is repaired, otherwise we may not pay. If you choose not to use a one of our approved repairers, we will increase your compulsory excess by £100.

All we need is 3 things and we will pay your claim the same day you provide us with an estimate or invoice:

  • Your details - name, policy number, vehicle details
  • Incident details - who was involved, what happened, any injuries and who was involved
  • Estimate or invoice for your repairs, below £2,500

This applies for all fault, non-fault and accidental damage claims, and excludes claims for total loss, fire and theft.

What to expect when you make a motor claim

Making a claim can sometimes seem stressful, especially if you’ve not had to claim before. Our short video will walk you through your motor claim, showing how we’re here to help every step of the way.

Driving can be unpredictable and we know accidents happen. At Zurich we want to make sure if you have an accident we get everything sorted as quickly and easily as we can. When a claim happens, it's important you tell us as soon as possible so we can help. You can get in touch with us online or over the phone.

If you can't drive your vehicle, it's best to call us if you can so we can get help to you straight away. We'll ask you some questions about you, your vehicle, anyone else involved and what's happened. The more details you can give us about the accident, anyone else involved, and if there were any injuries, the less we'll need to ask for later.

Don't worry if you don't have everything straight away, we'll let you know what we need if it's safe to do so please take the details of other people involved, such as passengers, witnesses, or anyone else. If you can take any photos of what's happened, this always helps. We can send you a link to the Easy Claim application which lets you upload the images of your vehicle straight to a Zurich engineer.

If your vehicle needs repairs, you can choose to use one of the wide network of Zurich approved repairers or if there's a garage you'd prefer then just let us know. If you choose a Zurich approved repairer they will be in touch to arrange repairs. The garage will complete an estimate for Zurich to approve. Work on Your vehicle can then begin.

If you choose a Zurich approved repairer, they can provide a basic courtesy vehicle. If you'd prefer to use your own garage. You'll need to contact them for an estimate. When this is ready. This should be sent to our engineers who will need at least 6 images of the damage with the vehicle's registration plate showing. We'll then authorise the relevant repairs so work on your vehicle can start.

If you need a courtesy vehicle, you'll need to hire and pay for this yourself, no matter who you choose. When your vehicle has been repaired, Zurich will pay the garage less, any applicable excess and VAT.

If you were at fault of the accident and we can contact the other person involved, we'll get in touch, offering our help to repair the damage.

When your vehicle's been repaired, if you aren't at fault, we'll get in touch with the other person's insurance company to cover the costs of the repairs. If your vehicle is written off, we'll collect and store your vehicle. Our engineers will then provide evaluation. When we've got all the documents we need, we'll send you the agreed settlement.

When we've paid your claim and recovered any costs we need to, your claim will be complete. Sorting out claims isn't always a quick process and we know this can be a daunting time. But don't worry, Zurich are here to help. We're always happy to answer any queries, big or small.
