Thinking of leaving?

You can cancel your life insurance policy at any time, but there may be alternatives for you to consider before making your decision.

If you have a financial adviser, we recommend speaking to them first so they can guide you through the options available based on your personal circumstances and what’s right for you. If you don’t have a financial adviser and would like to speak to one, you can find one at unbiased.co.uk or vouchedfor.co.uk.

Alternatively, while we can’t provide advice, we can explain the options available as an alternative to cancelling so you can decide what’s best for you.

Take a moment...

Before you dive into a big decision like this, take a moment to read through some of our frequently asked questions from customers.

If you’re still unsure and want to chat things through, just get in touch. We’re here to help you every step of the way.

And if your mind’s made up and you’ve decided cancelling is the best outcome for you, we’ll make it as smooth and seamless as possible.

Do I need to cancel my life insurance policy if I’ve paid off my mortgage?

Paying off your mortgage is a real milestone, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to part ways with your policy. This is especially important if you still have people who depend on you financially or if you want to be able to leave something behind if the worst happens.

Lots of people often think the two are directly linked and while they may have been taken out at the same time, you can choose to keep your cover running exactly as it is today or you may decide now’s the right time to review it if your circumstances have changed.

This might include looking at options to increase or decrease your sum insured or even review the term of your policy. If you want to chat through the options available, we’re here to help.

Do I need to cancel my life insurance policy if I’ve retired?

If you have Life Insurance, you don’t have to cancel your policy just because you’ve retired. You can choose to keep your policy running exactly as it is today and benefit from the same peace of mind for you and your family, of knowing you’re protected.

Alternatively, you can use this as an opportunity to review your cover if your needs have changed. For example, if you want to increase or decrease the level of cover or change your policy term.

If you have Income Protection, your policy will only pay out if you experience a loss of income, so if you aren’t working or rely on a retirement income, your policy is unlikely to be suitable.

If you are thinking of reviewing your cover on the back of a big lifetime event such as this, we’d recommend you do that with your financial adviser (if you have one), who can review your circumstances and assess what you need right now.

If you don’t have a financial adviser, you can always find one at unbiased.co.uk or vouchedfor.co.uk or give us a call to talk through your options. Whilst we can’t provide advice, we can explain the options available to help you make an informed decision.

Do I need to cancel my life insurance policy if I’m covered under my new employer scheme?

For Life Insurance, being part of an employer scheme means you get the additional reassurance of extra life insurance cover from your employer, as part of your benefits package. The good news is it doesn’t automatically mean you need to cancel what you’ve got already.

For Income Protection, your employer sickness scheme may pay out for a fixed period. Depending on the employer, this could vary from two weeks to two years. Your policy can operate alongside this if you have a deferred period before the policy pays out, which is the same or longer than the time you’ll receive sick pay. Your Zurich policy will pay out once you stop receiving an income from elsewhere.

You can still choose to keep your existing policy running independently if you’d like to. That means you’ll still keep the same great rates and benefits available under your Zurich protection policy and if you do subsequently change jobs in the future, you won’t have to worry about starting from scratch, which could mean premiums for like-for-like cover will be higher.

I’m getting divorced / separated. What do I need to do?

If you have a joint policy currently and you’re getting divorced or separated, Zurich may be able to offer the option to replace your existing policy and take out a new policy or policies, for one or both of you, based on the medical information you provided when you took out your policy originally.

This means you won’t normally need to give us any additional medical information.

If you need a little help to decide how much cover you need under your new policy, we can help with that too – take a look at our life insurance cover calculator.

Finally, if your policy is currently in joint names and you do wish to cancel, we’ll need to speak to both of you to do that, so just give us a call and we’ll be happy to chat through how we can help.
