4 tips to help you better manage lithium batteries

You probably don’t know it, but lithium batteries power our lives. From the smartphones in your pockets, to the electric vehicles and bikes on our roads — these tiny powerhouses have become indispensable. Whilst we can’t live without them, we need to treat them with care.

Why? Lithium batteries store significant amounts of energy, making them the preferred choice for countless devices.

But whilst lithium batteries have many advantages, such as the fact they’re portable and rechargeable, they present several safety risks – with how safe they are being determined by how they’re produced, used, stored and disposed of.

Claims have tripled in recent years, so how can you protect yourself and your property? Here are four tips to help you better manage lithium batteries:

1. Responsible use

Whilst it may be tempting to try and find a first or second-hand bargain when shopping, it’s important that you buy devices from trusted retailers.

Once the device has been bought, it’s also important to follow manufacturer’s guidelines on their use, as well as staying informed about product recalls.

2. Avoid exposure to hot temperatures

Just like us in the summer, our devices can be susceptible to becoming too hot when exposed to extreme temperatures. Avoid leaving devices in direct sunlight, and make sure smaller items such as e-cigarettes don’t end up in the washing machine or tumble dryer by mistake!

3. Charge them correctly

Whilst it can be convenient to charge batteries in phones or watches overnight, you should avoid charging these items for long periods of time.

When on charge, they should also be uncovered as anything resting on top of these devices can trap heat and increase the risk of overheating.

It’s mentioned above, but as a reminder, only use the charger that came with the device – in the event of needing a replacement, buy this from a trusted retailer and ensure it’s fit for purpose.

4. Check-in on your batteries

Pay attention to the condition of your batteries, avoiding any that are damaged, swollen or deformed.

If you think there is something wrong with a battery, stop using it immediately. Proper disposal of old batteries is also essential to prevent environmental hazards.

There is no doubt that lithium batteries are a huge part of our lives, and will continue to be. However, their safe use is extremely important.

By following these tips, you can significantly reduce the risks of accidents and protect yourself, your family and your property.
