Day in the life of a Zurich Engineer
Meet Ben Johnson, our Zurich Engineer Surveyor at the Port of Immingham, part of Associated British Ports. Ben looks after the wider Humber region, including the ports of Hull, Grimsby, and Goole. He inspects all kinds of machinery, from cranes to forklift trucks, to make sure they’re safe, compliant, and working properly.
Having a Zurich employee on-site full-time shows the high level of service we offer. It’s not just about inspections, it’s about building trust, working closely with our customers, and being there when they need us most. Ben’s work is vital in keeping port operations safe and running smoothly across the region.
Hi, my name is Ben. I’ve been with Zurich Engineering now for six years. I’ve got 20 years’ experience within the inspection business and my main client who I look after is ABP.
So, my day to day will generally have a morning briefing with Phil, who’s the inspection coordinator for ABP. Once we’ve had the briefing we’ll then usually go out, carry out inspections around the ports. This could be anything from ship to shore container crane, a dockside crane, reach stackers, forklifts. It really is what ever is due.
Things we are looking for within the inspection are safety defects, i.e we’re looking for fractured welds, elongated chains, broken wires and anything what’s really going to affect the safety of that machine.
Zurich and ABP work well together. As we plan the work together, we have designated operators for the machines and also share a office space. So, most equipment is inspected on a 6 or 12 monthly basis. We manage our own diaries, so we have the ability to see what’s coming up, what’s due for inspection ensuring that nothing goes over the due date.
The most rewarding aspects of the job for me, is knowing that I’m a small part in the bigger picture of finding a defect that could potentially cause a failure of a machine.
