Public liability insurance
Public liability insurance can protect your organisation against third-party injury or accidental damage claims involving volunteers or members of the public.
Employers’ liability insurance
If your organisation employs people in any capacity, employers’ liability insurance can protect you against claims relating to illness, injury, or death of an employee in the course of their work duties.
Contents insurance
This covers greenhouses, sheds and other outbuildings on allotment or garden sites, as well as any equipment owned or used by your club/association.
Trustees’ insurance
Trustees’ indemnity insurance, also known as directors, trustees and officers’ insurance, can protect your trustees or senior decision-makers should a claim be made against them personally. Our trustees’ insurance is provided under our Financial and Administration Liability cover, which also includes corporate liability and crime cover.
Gardening club insurance FAQs
A gardening club is an organised group created by those who have a passion for gardening, plants and the outdoors. The people involved can be friends, people who live near each other or even total strangers who are like-minded and share a hobby. The club might organise plant swaps, share cuttings, garden on private land or even create a community garden if there is a space to do so. For the latter, the club would need permission from the local council or landowner.
The most important form of insurance for a gardening club is public liability. This would cover the legal costs and compensation should the group be sued for injury or accidental damage to a third-party. A community gardening club might also wish to insure their equipment. This would cover the loss or damage of any gardening tools which your club owns.
Allotment insurance FAQs
Allotments bring joy to so many gardeners who perhaps don’t have the space at home to grow their own fruit or vegetables or to enjoy the great outdoors. Allotment plots are usually rented by budding gardeners from private or local authority landlords.
An allotment association is often a committee that looks after the running of an allotment. This is sometimes necessary when there are lots of plots being rented out. The committee usually has a chair, secretary and treasurer as well as members who are willing to get involved to maintain the site, keep problems at bay, promote gardening and welcome new members. Regular meetings can be held to discuss issues, create guidelines (for example, rules that say what can and can’t be grown on site) or share new ideas for the community.
Some allotments may benefit from being part of the National Allotment Society.
Allotment associations generally require public liability insurance to ensure the organisation is covered in the event of injury to a third party, such as a member of the public or allotment tenant, that they are held legally liable for. Allotments can also have equipment on-site that is stored in sheds and other storage units, so it’s important that this is covered too.
Please note, our allotment insurance only covers communal areas within the allotment, and not the individual spaces themselves. Allotment tenants will need to hold appropriate public liability insurance cover (usually covered by home contents insurance).
Most policies will usually include public liability cover (for claims made against you for injury, or accidental damage to property). You might also like to consider employers’ liability insurance and buildings and contents insurance.
