How to help customers protect their property from wind damage

Strong winds can damage roofs, windows, doors and outdoor structures. Regular maintenance and a clear response plan can help reduce disruption, repair costs and risks to people.

Wind is one of the eight weather types covered by the Met Office weather warning system, alongside rain, thunderstorms, snow, lightning, ice, extreme heat and fog.

Warnings are issued using a colour-coded system (yellow, amber or red) to indicate the potential for damage, disruption and at times, can be a threat to life.

Use this practical checklist to help customers prepare their property before severe weather, stay safe during a storm and act quickly afterwards.

How can customers protect their roof?

  • Inspect the roof regularly for loose, damaged or missing tiles, and arrange repairs before severe weather arrives
  • Seal gaps where wind-driven rain could enter the building
  • Make sure rooftop equipment, including solar panels, is maintained and securely fixed. Use a competent contractor for inspections and repairs

How can customers maintain gutters and downpipes?

  • Check that gutters and downpipes are firmly secured
  • Remove leaves and debris so rainwater can drain freely. Blockages can cause water to overflow and may lead to damage

What should you secure outside?

  • Store or secure loose items such as tables, chairs, planters, bins and signage
  • Cut back loose or overhanging branches where it is safe and appropriate to do so. Use a qualified contractor for larger trees or work at height
  • Check fences, gates and posts, and arrange repairs to anything loose or unstable

How can customers protect windows and doors?

  • Repair cracked glazing and check that windows and doors close securely
  • Seal gaps to help reduce draughts and prevent wind-driven rain entering the building
  • Do not attempt temporary repairs during dangerous conditions. Wait until it is safe and use a competent contractor where needed

How should you prepare gazebos and sheds?

  • Anchor gazebos to a suitable solid base using fixings designed for the structure
  • If severe winds are forecast and it is safe to do so, remove the canopy or fabric to reduce wind resistance
  • Inspect frames, fixings and fabric regularly, repairing or replacing weakened parts promptly
  • Secure sheds and garden buildings to a solid base, seal gaps around doors and windows, and check the roof fixings
  • Treat timber in line with the manufacturer’s instructions to help protect it from swelling and rot

What should be in a customer’s windstorm plan?

  • Keep an emergency kit with essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, medication and first-aid items
  • Record how to safely turn off power, water and gas
  • Keep phones charged and make sure emergency repair, insurer and key property contacts are easy to access
  • Make sure employees, and other relevant people know what to do, where to go and who is responsible for key actions

Have your customers checked their buildings insurance?

  • Encourage customers to review their policy to understand what is covered, including any limits or exclusions, especially for items kept in the open
  • Encourage customers to keep their building valuation up to date and maintain the property in good condition
  • If a customer is unsure about cover or the information their insurer needs, please reach out to your usual Zurich contact

What should customers do after a storm?

  • Wait until conditions are safe before inspecting the property. Do not approach fallen power lines, unstable structures or damaged roofs
  • Encourage customers to report damage to their insurer as soon as practical and check with them before arranging non-emergency repairs
  • Take clear photographs and videos of the damage, where it is safe to do so, and keep records of emergency work and costs
  • Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, but do not put yourself or anyone else at risk
