Motor insurance database

Why do I need to update the MID?

The Motor Insurance Database (MID), overseen by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), holds details of insurance arrangements for every insured vehicle on UK roads. It helps tackle the problem of an estimated one million uninsured motorists in the United Kingdom, allowing the police to quickly identify whether a vehicle is insured.

How does Brexit affect making a road accident claim abroad?

Since December 31, 2020, the UK has withdrawn from the fourth EU Motor Directive, which helps European Union citizens claim for accidents outside their countries of residence.

UK-based victims of accidents in EU countries now have to make their claims direct to the foreign insurer or, in the event of an accident with an uninsured or ‘hit-and-run’ driver, to the equivalent of the MIB.

The MIB provides more detailed guidance on how making a claim after an accident in an EU country has been affected by Brexit.
