Workplace injuries and how Zurich can help

During 2019/2020 693,000 people suffered a non-fatal workplace injury. The most common workplace injuries are slip, trips or falls. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) an estimated 27,000 people leave work each year following a workplace injury and do not return. In excess of 38.8 million working days are being lost due to workplace injury and work-related ill health each year, which equates to a cost of over 16 billion to the UK economy. While musculoskeletal disorders are generally regarded as the most common type of work-related injury, work-related stress has now become the highest reason for absenteeism from the workplace.

Rehabilitation is a key tool in managing claims from individuals who have sustained an injury in the workplace. Zurich customers who have  experienced an injury at work have access to rehabilitation services as part of their employee liability policy with Zurich.  We frequently see people with injuries sustained at work to their head, neck, limb, hand, any part of the body.

Our General Insurance Rehabilitation Team works with businesses where their employees have had an accident at work, by providing a rehabilitation programme to assist and support injured people and restoring their pre-injury function.  We offer support, medical expertise and treatments that includes physiotherapy, psychological, occupational therapy diagnostic and surgical solutions.

The team helps to:

  • Early access to medical expertise and treatment reduces absence levels, leads to a quicker recovery and return to work for employees
  • Helps manage the claim and ensure correct treatment is put in place
  • Can enable the employee to remain at work and still receive treatment
  • An early return to work will reduce the financial strain for the injured party which can reduce claims
  • Helps businesses demonstrate a proactive approach to employee’s welfare and a commitment to their wellbeing
  • Rehabilitation can help manage a claim and mitigate losses as a faster recovery enables quicker settlement
  • Less exaggeration of symptoms and reduction in the average number of days lost.
  • Rehabilitation demonstrates a pro-active approach to risk management
By providing proactive treatment and helping employees back to work quicker than anticipated without access to the service, Zurich’s General Insurance Rehabilitation Team have saved our customers 190,833 lost working days.

One customer who actively uses the service has saved 10,654 working days, which is 2,131 weeks
