Thurrock Council’s Flood Management Upgrade
03/28/2025
Flooding is a big problem in the UK. It affects people, the environment, infrastructure, and the economy. With climate change causing worse weather, the UK Government says floods have a ‘significant’ impact. So, we need better flood management at all levels.
Thurrock Council in Essex, near the River Thames, has had issues with flooding for years. Adewale Adesina, the Lead Officer for Emergency Planning and Response, says they need precise, local data for effective flood plans. Traditional weather data isn’t detailed enough.
To tackle this, Zurich Municipal teamed up with Previsico, a company that prevents flooding with new technology. Previsico’s early warning system, developed from 20 years of research at Loughborough University, gives real-time alerts about potential floods. This software looks at rainfall forecasts and sends timely warnings to local authorities. Using Previsico’s software has greatly helped Thurrock Council. It lets them:
- Divert traffic and evacuate people and businesses when needed.
- Set up flood defences ahead of time.
- Get emergency teams ready and use resources wisely, even with tight budgets.
- This partnership helps protect lives and health, which is the council’s main duty to its community.
