Zurich's stance on Northern Ireland MOT backlog

Clarifying Zurich's position on MOT tests as the backlog in Northern Ireland continues.

MOT backlog - Zurich's stance

The following information clarifies Zurich's stance, and answers some of the questions brokers are likely to be fielding.

  • We are aware of the current issues affecting MOT test centres throughout Northern Ireland.
  • In the event that your car is due a MOT please apply for an exemption certificate from the Driver and Vehicle Agency.
  • We would remind you that it is a condition of our policy wording that the vehicle is maintained in a roadworthy condition.
  • We would not routinely ask for sight of the MOT for a straight forward claim unless we had concerns about the roadworthiness of the vehicle, and if this was likely to have caused or contributed to the claim or it's severity.
  • For a fire, theft or total loss claim we will normally require sight of a valid MOT, if relevant, as a condition of settling the claim. However, for the duration of the current situation affecting the MOT test centres in Northern Ireland, if the MOT has expired but evidence that an application for an exemption certificate from the Driver and Vehicle Agency has been sought and the claim is otherwise acceptable, we will not make an issue of this unless we have grounds to suspect that the vehicle may not have been roadworthy and if this may have caused or contributed to the claim or its severity.
  • We will consider all claims on their own merits.
