The Big Help Out 2024

The Big Help Out, taking place from the 07th – 09th June, first occurred after the Kings Coronation last year with over 7 million people taking part.

Back for 2024, The Big Help Out is taking place at the end of Volunteers Week   with the aim to raise awareness of volunteering in your local area. If you’re thinking of running an event but aren’t sure where to start,  the Big Help Out have created an app for smartphones to find local organisations that need help.

What is the Big Help Out?

The big help out is a national event involving local charitable organisations. Organised by a number of non profit organisations, business and government agencies, the aim is to bring people together to help build a better future together.

A movement here to stay

The Big Help Out has evolved into a nationwide movement encouraging people to volunteer in their local communities. From cleaning up local parks to supporting neighbours with their shopping, the Big Help Out provides a variety of opportunities for you to get involved and lend a helping hand to make an impact.

The King is encouraging not only the general public, but also schools and businesses for this year’s event. His message in January was:

“I am delighted to support the return of the Big Help Out in 2024. This Summer, between June 7th and June 9th, there will be another opportunity to join so many dedicated volunteers in giving time to a worthy cause of their choosing. Whoever and wherever you are, each of us will have a chance to play a small part in helping transform our communities for the benefit of all.

This year, the Big Help Out is particularly keen to invite schools and businesses to be a part of this special moment. Young people’s energy and enthusiasm can be enormously valuable, and business is a vital part of the fabric of both our local communities and of our wider society.”

How to get involved

Getting involved is easy, you can download the Big Help Out (BPO) app  to see posts that local groups have made for support, or you can simply reach out to organisations in your local community. Find out what organisations in your area are doing to acknowledge the event and ask if they need volunteers. Whether you can spare a few hours or a full day, any contribution would be greatly appreciated.

Benefits of Volunteering

Participating in the Big Help Out offers so many benefits for both volunteers and the communities they help, including:

Skill Development: Volunteers have the opportunity to learn new skills, gain experience they wouldn’t usually have access to and expand their networks with a hands on approach.

Community Engagement: By volunteering, the community becomes actively engaged in their local area, building connections with fellow volunteers as well as the wider public.

Social Impact: Through working together, volunteers can make meaningful change on a large scale , addressing issues in the area and making a lasting impact in their communities.

Planning your event

If your charity or not for profit organisation are arranging their own Big Help Out event, make sure you take time to plan the day and take a look at our articles on completing a risk assessment and how to organise a safe event:
