Presenteeism - Peter's story

Presenteeism refers to employees who are suffering from physical or mental ill health but continue to work. Unwell employees at work can have an adverse effect on productivity and morale, both for themselves and the wider team.

Our expertise in presenteeism means that we can work with individuals, and provide the support and guidance they need, to help return them to good health and prevent an absence from occurring.

Read about Peter, a software designer who continued to work despite a serious condition and how our rehabilitation services were able to help.

Please note, this case study is an example based on our experience and demonstrates the help and support we are able to provide in this situation.

Early Intervention Services

Early intervention services are key to getting employees back on their feet and back to work as quickly and as effectively as possible.

The service aims to provide support as soon as possible following the employee's initial absence from work and if possible before an employee has even stopped working, with help available from our rehabilitation team. Our Early Intervention and notification guide has more information on this service.

The service is available to our customers at no extra cost and is managed by our in-house rehabilitation team. Employers can call their dedicated case manager or download our Early Intervention Absence Management Guide for more information.

Our rehabilitation team regularly host workshops covering a variety of different topics including Becoming a Mental Health First Aider, Identifying, Addressing and Managing Work Related Stress, and Managing difficult conversations including mediation techniques.

To find out about the training sessions and workshops we are running next year, download our 2020 Rehabilitation training calendar.

Responding to customer needs

We have seen an increasing trend in mental health claims so we’ve made sure that our staff are well trained to manage this type of claim and can quickly identify opportunities to engage our rehabilitation services.

We have an in-house mental health first aid (MHFA) trainer (also a Registered Mental Health Nurse and mediator), who is accredited via MHFA England. As a result more than 50% of our staff are now MHFA trained too.

Not only does this mean we’re doing our utmost to exhibit the kind of workplace we encourage of our customers, but it also means that whoever our customers deal with, at whatever stage of their journey with us, there’s a pretty good chance the person they’re speaking to is trained on one of the key issues affecting businesses today.

To get a quote, employers and trustees should contact their intermediary / Financial Adviser.

Intermediaries / Financial Advisers can call their dedicated Zurich contact on 0800 141 2002 or email us at
