Age UK is the largest UK charity supporting older people with an excellent reputation for tackling more challenging issues.

The charity Age UK is dedicated to improving later life for everyone and  (through Help the Aged as it was formerly known) has been a key partner since 2005.

What is A Call in Time?

A Call in Time is a telephone befriending service which was set up in 2005.   Funded by Zurich Community Trust, the programme provides timely support for older people who are lonely or isolated. Working with Age UK, we aim to pro-actively transform the quality of life of older people whatever issues they are facing.   Over the years our funding support has amounted to £885,000.  This was used to pilot, evaluate and roll out the programme to other corporates.

The programme received a positive evaluation from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2008 as well as an Award for Innovation from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).   It has also been accredited by the Mentoring and Befriending Association.

How it works

Around 90 Zurich volunteer callers from most locations in the UK currently support Call in Time.   The programme has also expanded considerably in the past six years by bringing in 19 other corporate partners - including Prudential, Legal & General and Wilkinsons - with their own employee volunteers.

  • The volunteer caller and older person are matched by a co-ordinator from Age UK, who also provides training and support for the volunteers.
  • Volunteers call their designated older person on a regular basis, at a frequency and time agreed between them (but usually weekly) from their desks.  The programme means that volunteers can make an enormous difference without moving from their work space.
  • A 20-30 minute telephone call once a week is all that's needed - this phone call is so precious as it is often the only call the older person will receive.
