Whilst many older people enjoy comfortable incomes, live in good housing and keep in good health, there are others that don't.

One in three report little contact with friends.  Isolation and inactivity can lead to health problems such as depression, dementia and anxiety as well as decreased mobility.

Facts about our ageing population

As a nation we face enormous challenges to support our ageing population.

  • There are 9.6 million people aged over 65 in the UK with 4.6 million of those being over 75 years old
  • 1.8 million pensioners live in poverty
  • People over 75 will account for 10% of the population by 2023

A Call in Time

This programme focusses on supporting isolated, older people through telephone befriending and we work in partnership with the UK's largest charity working with and for older people, Age UK. Zurich Community Trust's support involves a combination of long term funding and encourages employee volunteers to make a regular and friendly call to check on the wellbeing of some of the most isolated and lonely older people in our communities.

The aim is to transform the quality of life of the older people they call - and for some it is quite simply a lifeline.
