Alzheimer's Society, Swindon, give practical and emotional support to local people with dementia and Alzheimer's, including their carers. They want to ensure that people with dementia are able to live in communities that are supportive and free from prejudice.

The Alzheimer's Society hold a monthly fish and chip lunch with after-lunch musical entertainment. On Saturday 15th  December this will become their all popular Xmas party. 60 people will attend (30 people with dementia and 30 carers) To make this party extra special it would be wonderful if your team can provide 30 wrapped Christmas gifts max value £5 each. This could be a tin of biscuits - Sweets or a voucher. An added bonus would be a Santa to distribute them on the afternoon.

The Alzheimer's Society organise a monthly Memory Café for up to 30 people attending at the Olive Tree Café, in Manor Garden Centre. Their December meeting will be their annual Christmas party on Thursday 13th December. It would be great if you could fundraise £50 to enable the café pay for a professional entertainer to come along to this session to lead us in singing carols and seasonal songs.

Marlborough House is a 12 bedded Inpatient and day patient unit caring for adolescents experiencing a range of different mental health difficulties including depression, anorexia or bipolar. An average stay is 3 months.

Christmas festivities can be a difficult time for the young people at Marlborough House and emotions can become a little overwhelming. Please create a 'calm space' to facilitate a daily mindfulness group over the Christmas period and rest of the year. Here's an opportunity to get involved with one of our charity partners. You will attend an established Carer cafe and source and deliver a Christmas craft activity. These carers rarely benefit from one on one attention. How about wreath making in Royal Wootton Bassett?, ( 6 maximum carers) or / and Chippenham Carers cafe? ( 5-11 carers)

Our charity partner would relish the opportunity to work, either in person or on-line to develop the CSW 12 days of Christmas carol. With the final version being filmed and added to the CSW website. The carol should highlight the daily pressure & commitment of being a carer. SAMPLE - On the fourth day of Christmas my carer said to me: 4 big hugs, 3 cups of tea, 2 wipe away the tears a Magical Christmas Tree This will benefit all carers and cared for. It will develop understanding in the wider community highlighting the daily pressure of being a carer.

Carers Support Wiltshire are one of our partner charities and they would love us to call their identified carers for a Christmas Catch up. Volunteers will spend 15-30 minutes chatting with and befriending a carer. This phone call may be the only opportunity for the carer to communicate with someone outside their home. Simple, everyday conversation will make the difference to the carer to limit isolation and improve well their being.

Cotswold House Marlborough

What's the challenge?

Cotswold House Marlborough are a 12 bedded inpatient unit, providing specialist eating disorder care for adults from 18-65, male and female, from the South of England and Wales. They also provide day care for up to 6 locally based patients.

Their patients would love it if your team will transform the courtyard to be festive! They would really like to have a real Christmas tree, with lights and decorations. This will help boost morale of all residents especially those who won't be home for Christmas and all the Cotswold House staff.

What's the challenge?

Headway Swindon supports 94 adults affected by brain injury and their families each week. They provide a programme of cognitive rehabilitation which works to enable people redevelop lost skills such as memory, attention, emotional adjustment and planning. They also provide speech and language services as many have lost the ability to communicate effectively.

Headway will provide festive boxes for you to make a small treat hamper of goodies such as chocolate, biscuits and sweets. The boxes should be wrapped in festive paper so each client will have a gift to take home for Christmas day. Icing on the cake would be your team joining in singing carols to bring Christmas spirit to the centre.

What's the challenge?

Headway Swindon supports 94 adults affected by brain injury and their families each week. They provide a programme of cognitive rehabilitation which works to enable people redevelop lost skills such as memory, attention, emotional adjustment and planning. They also provide speech and language services as many have lost the ability to communicate effectively.

Headway would like to work with Zurich leading up to Christmas to create Christmas crackers for clients. This would be a lovely craft afternoon and enable clients to take home a gift for themselves or a loved one. They have 94 clients so this challenge can be taken by more than one team.

Marlborough House ask that you kindly source a Christmas gift for each of the 12 inpatients. It will be given out at a Christmas party organised by the nursing staff and will lift the mood and morale of those receiving it. Guidance will be given on the suitability of presents depending on the sex and age of the young people.

Phoenix Enterprises

What's the challenge?

Phoenix Enterprises, one of our local charity partners, is a social enterprise that provides a stepping stone for adults with mental health concerns and disabilities to achieve mainstream employment. Their aim is to work with people recovering from short and long-term mental health issues, ranging from depression and anxiety to autism and Asperger's, to gain the skills and confidence to build their futures.

Our charity partner would like you to hold a fun creative activity session. Their service users will help make the decorations including those for the Christmas tree. All are needed for their special Christmas party. They see this as an opportunity for Zurich staff to get to know everyone and see what goes on at Phoenix.

Prospect Hospice

What's the challenge?

Prospect Hospice is the only dedicated adult end of life care provider covering the areas of Swindon, Marlborough and north east Wiltshire. Providing care at the hospice itself, their Wellbeing centre in Marlborough, at the Great Western Hospital, out in the community and in people's own homes.

An opportunity for individuals and Teams! Each December the Prospect run a charity gift wrapping station in the Brunel Centre in Swindon. The public are able to bring along their purchased gifts and have them beautifully gift wrapped by their team of volunteers (could be you) in exchange for a donation to the hospice. All materials and full training is provided prior to your volunteering day.

Stonewater Housing Association

What's the challenge?

Hazelmead House in Old Town, part of Stonewater Housing Association is a project for people recovering from mental health issues and their aim is to prepare people for their return to the community. Volunteers can really help with this transition.

They would like you to help their residents with their social skills and enable them to mix with people by helping to organise and run a Christmas Karaoke evening for their 14 residents. They estimate £100 will buy the refreshments and music needed.

What's the challenge?

Swindon Ten to Eighteen (STEP) provide support and life skills. They offer development / learning opportunities for children & young people who have considerable vulnerabilities. These include sufferers of physical/emotional abuse and/or neglect, primary family carers, self-harmers, those in care, with mental health issues, experiencing poverty and deprivation.

STEP would be delighted if you can provide the following materials to enable 50 service users to make reindeer sweet pots : Items required 50 glass jars (jam jar size), pipe cleaners (brown), wobbly eyes, pom poms (red), red ribbon, chocolate treats to fill the jars - approximate cost £75-£100 They would welcome anyone who would like to support the young people complete the activity too but this is not compulsory :)

Swindon Down's Syndrome Group

What's the challenge?

Swindon Down's Syndrome Group is a parent-led charity supporting people with Downs Syndrome, their families, carers and all those with an interest in Downs Syndrome in Swindon and the surrounding area.

The Group are arranging a Christmas Party for all of their families, and would like you to provide a wrapped selection box to be given to each of their 90 children as a pressie to take home. There's a party on 23rd November & 1st December. (Any offerings of buffet food for the party will be gratefully accepted too :)

 Can you collect and deliver jumble for the group to sell at their annual jumble sale, taking place on 10th November. If you can they'd love it if you can help out on the day too.

1171  A time for giving - not forgetting

The Nelson Trust

What's the challenge?

The Nelson Trust has a woman’s centre in Swindon. It is a special haven for women affected by addiction, trauma, abuse and mental health problems. Working closely with local services, they are reaching out to sex workers, those coming out of prison, victims of domestic abuse, teenage girls at risk, and women and their children suffering the effects of a difficult upbringing. One-to-one counselling, specialist workshops and practical support all help to build confidence, empowering these families can make a fresh start.

Christmas can be a very difficult time for many of the women The Nelson Trust work with. Something as simple as receiving a Christmas present will make such a difference to them. Can your team donate a present for each woman being supported? This, for many, could be the only gift that they receive. They are looking for donations of gifts such as toiletry gift sets, boxes of chocolates, slippers, hats, gloves and scarfs.

The Trussell Trust

What's the challenge?

The Trussell Trust Shoebox Appeal: Every year, staff in Swindon kindly fill a shoebox with goodies that will be sent overseas, and given to a person who would otherwise receive nothing during the festive season. They do this as individuals, or with family members/friends. they donate nearly 200 shoeboxes each year to this appeal. The 2018 Appeal launches late October.

MULTIPLE TEAMS can now support the appeal by making up 20 shoe boxes. A full list of all items required is available along with a Top 10 Tips sheet on how to buy effectively to reduce the cost of filling each box. All boxes should be completed by Wednesday 14th November for collection by the Trussell Trust.

Swindon & Gloucestershire Mind

What's the challenge?

Swindon & Gloucestershire Mind are the a provider of mental health services and support in the town. Their Swindon services include counselling which specialises in self harm and self injury reduction, employment support and wellbeing co-ordination.

Swindon and Gloucestershire mind have their Christmas disco booked for Friday 30th November. The service users really look forward to this annual event. For some it's their only social night out in the year. Mind would love it if they could donate some special prizes for their evening raffle.
