1096  Happy Hampers

Challenge group size: F

Caring Together in Woodhouse and Little London

What's the challenge?

One of our local partners, Caring Together supports over 350 older people in Leeds.

Time for a Hamper Challenge! They would love a team to help with their hamper appeal. For some of their members this will be the only present they get and they really look forward to it. The team could collect food (tins, cakes, tea bags etc) but there is no need to make up the hampers (as they have some local older volunteers already in place to do this!). They would also love the team to arrange to deliver the hampers (along with their staff) for a couple of hours (a morning/afternoon) to be completed sometime during the 1st week in December.

1097  Give a helping Christmas Hand

The Real Junk Food Project

What's the challenge?

The Real Junk Food Project is a global, organic network of 'pay as you feel' cafes. They divert food destined for waste and use it to create delicious and healthy meals.

Now time for a Supermarket sweep! The Real Junk Food Project has a food waste supermarket in Leeds. Christmas is a very busy time of year for the charity as increasing numbers of people and organisations are kindly donating surplus food to them. All food they receive needs to be weighed in, recorded and then put out in their food boutique, or organised for delivery to the schools and cafes they work with. They would love a team of volunteers to help them collect, weigh in and organise the food in their 'Pay As You Feel Food Boutique'.

This can be picked up by more than one team.

Mind

What's the challenge?

Mind - one of our existing National Partners, is  the key provider of mental health services and support in the city.

Here's a challenge for the whole building plus family and friends!  It's time to go through your cupboards and wardrobes to throw out those clothes, books, cd's, toys and homeware that you'll never use again in readiness for your Chrimbo pressies.  Please provide 15 bags full of good quality second hand items to replenish the stock in Mind's local charity shop.  Mind will provide branded bags.  All you have to do is fill them and deliver your donations to their local shop.  What could be more simple?

1099  It’s party time!

Bramley Elderly Action

What's the challenge?

Bramley Elderly Action (BEA) is a neighbourhood network scheme established in 1994 to work with older people within the Bramley, Stanningley and Swinnow areas of the city. Their aim is to improve the health, wellbeing and quality of life for local older people - enabling independence and tackling isolation.

For the past 10+ years BEA has held a special Christmas Tea Dance on the second Sunday in December with the generous help of Zurich staff and they would love to continue the event this year. The Christmas period can be a particularly difficult time for their members; older people in general can become more isolated because of the cold weather and increased financial pressures can further dampen spirits. Their Christmas tea dance attracts on average 50 + members on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy a truly festive occasion with turkey nibbles, mince pies, hot chocolate, crackers and a room full of friends to celebrate with. It is also a chance for BEA to invite new attendees and ask regulars to bring a friend.

In previous years, volunteers from Zurich have provided and served all the food and refreshments, helped deck the halls of the centre to create a Christmas theme and joined their members in dancing, singing and socialising.

The dance will take place on Sunday 10 December
Time – event 2-4pm (potential volunteer time 1-5 hours)
Venue – Bramley Community Centre Waterloo Lane Leeds 13.

1100  Festive Fun at the Market

Challenge group size: F

St Gemma's Hospice

What's the challenge?

St Gemma's Hospice is a Leeds based charity providing expert care and support for local people with terminal illnesses. They offer specialist medical and nursing care to thousands of local people each year and offer invaluable support to their families and friends.

St Gemma's Hospice would love a couple of teams to either help them set up their Christmas Market or to volunteer at the Christmas Market which takes place at the Hospice on Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd December. They need one team to help them set up stalls, decorations and a Santa’s Grotto. Then another team to help on the event day itself with running the stalls and to sell refreshments at this family fun event. They also sell Christmas trees at the market which are very popular! This can be taken up by more than one team.

Do you have little time to spare in the lead up to Christmas? Don't worry - you can still get involved! In January, St Gemma's Hospice will need help with their ‘Christmas Tree Recycling Service’. The hospice offers to collect households Christmas trees in vans, taking them to the council’s recycling centres in return for a donation. They have a team of volunteers who come together to help in shifts over 4-5 days to help them with this challenge - it raises approx £10,000 towards their patients care - an extremely worthwhile challenge! This can be taken up by more than one team.
