1043  Step up to the festive challenge

Challenge group size: F

Step by Step

What's the challenge?

Step by Step's mission is to empower homeless people and those facing adversity to achieve their full potential. They work with young homeless people (aged 11 to 25), many of whom have been victims of family breakdown, or have suffered abuse. They provide support, accommodation and personal development, to enable young people to progress.

Website

They would love a team to throw a Christmas Party a week or two before Christmas for the young people they support. This can be done at one of their local foyers or at the office (with groups of up to 6 people if it is taking place at their foyer). A Christmas Party would mean a lot to the young people they support as Christmas can be particularly tough for people going through hard times.

1044  No booby prizes in this quiz

Challenge group size: F

Brendoncare

What's the challenge?

Brendoncare Clubs run 50 older people's clubs, supporting over 900 members across Hampshire. They work to improve the quality of life of older people to help them avoid loneliness and isolation by staying actively involved in the community and by meeting new and old friends.

Website

Christmas can be one of the loneliest times of the year for their members so they would like a team to organise a mince pie making session and Christmas quiz during December at their Club base in Gosport, where ideally all the clubs in the area could be invited too. They would like the team to provide the ingredients, equipment and something for the members to take them home in. This challenge will be held on a weekday afternoon for a couple of hours.

Brain Tumour Research

What's the challenge?

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer... yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Brain Tumour Research is striving to fund a network of seven dedicated research centres whilst challenging the government and larger cancer charities to invest more in brain tumour research.

Website

The charity has their own Charity Christmas Cards in 19 designs and would appreciate a team to help out selling them from mid October to colleagues, friends and family. £150 pays for a Research Nurse to collect brain tumour tissue from the hospital each day.

Step by Step

What's the challenge?

Step by Step's mission is to empower homeless people and those facing adversity to achieve their full potential. They provide support, accommodation and personal development, to enable young people to progress.
Website

Bring some Christmas cheer into their accommodation services, get a team together and ‘Deck their foyers with boughs of holly’.  They have Foyers in Havant, Fareham and Gosport. Dates and times are flexible - end of November/ early December. Groups of up to 10 at a time welcome.  Decorating their foyers cost money and time, but can add a lot to their staff and the young people emotionally.

1053  Christmas Deliveries

Challenge group size: F

Fareshare Southern Central

What's the challenge?

FareShare Southern Central rescues surplus food which would otherwise go to waste and redistributes it to charities and community groups working with vulnerable people. They work to tackle two problems; food poverty and food waste.

Website

The challenge is to sort, pick and pack one ton of surplus food which will be distributed to charities and community groups. In a team of four, you will be rolling your sleeves up and get stuck in. It is a physically demanding role as you will be expected to lift trays of food up to 15kg in weight. You may also have the chance to go out on the van delivering food to charity partners. This challenge can be booked by a couple of teams.

1054  Thoughts and Treats

Challenge group size: F

Friends of PICU

What's the challenge?

Friends of PICU support the children and families on the intensive care unit at Southampton University Hospital, the lead medical centre for the South of England and the Channel Islands.  PICU cares for critically ill children from new born to 17years of age.  More than 900 children are admitted to this specialist unit each year.  These children receive 24 hour 1:1 care on PICU.

Website

There may be very little notice that this is where a child will need to go and they can be on the specialist unit for days. Many parents do not want to leave their child's bedside for a few minutes, let alone go shopping for food, or may not even have transport to visit a supermarket.  It would be amazing if a team could provide 16 food hampers with a selection of essential and treat items, ones that can last for a while, such as tea, coffee, biscuits, sweets, cakes, cereals, crisps, tin soups. The parents would be so surprised and overwhelmed that people are thinking of them over the festive period.

1084  'Saint' Nicholas

Challenge group size: L

Saints Foundation

What's the challenge?

Saints Foundation is an independent charity aligned to Southampton Football Club. They are also our new partners on the "Generation Gains"  programme. Harnessing the passion of the Club and its fans, they aim to INSPIRE, SUPPORT and DELIVER positive change and equality of opportunity for young people and vulnerable adults across Southampton and surrounding areas.

Website

Around 100 of their Senior Saints will be attending a Christmas party during late December and they would like a team to be able to provide them all with a small gift to take away e.g. tin of biscuits or bottle of bubbles. For some of them this, this will be the only present they will receive. It would be great if the team could attend the party to mingle and chat with the lunchers as well as help out with serving should the need arise.
