Friends of PICU

What's the challenge?

Friends of PICU support the children and families on the intensive care unit at Southampton University Hospital, the lead medical centre for the South of England and the Channel Islands. PICU cares for critically ill children from new born to 17 years of age. More than 900 children are admitted to this specialist unit each year. These children receive 24 hour 1:1 care on PICU.

There may be very little notice that this is where a child will need to go and they can be on the specialist unit for days, should their child become seriously ill. Many parents do not want to leave their child's bedside for a few minutes, let alone go shopping for food, or may not even have transport to visit a supermarket. It would be amazing if a team could provide 10 food hampers with a selection of essential and treat items, ones that can last for a while, such as tea, coffee, biscuits, sweets, cakes, cereals, crisps, tin soups. The parents would be so surprised and overwhelmed that people are thinking of them over the festive period.

On Tuesday 11 December, the Eastleigh Singing for the Brain group will be hosting a Christmas Carol event between 10.30am and 12pm. The group will be joined by a local choir, and one of our corporate partners may be providing some nibbles for the event. Our ask for Zurich volunteers is to help with the setup of the event, and assist with running of it, e.g. providing teas and coffees for our group members, and helping to ensure everyone has a lovely time.
