"As I begin to approach the next major step in my life (I hope to retire in 3 years time!) I have started to think about what life will be like after I no longer have to get up each morning for work. Whilst I am sure my wife will be keeping me busy with a whole list of jobs, my knowledge of and involvement with Zurich Community Trust (ZCT) has challenged me to think about what else I should like to do.

My feeling is that life will be much more rewarding if I can find a positive challenge outside the home and so, with my wife's support I have decided that I would like to have the opportunity to pass on the experiences that I have had during my business life and to hopefully make a positive contribution to help others as they start their journey.

Through Zurich Community Trust, I have been introduced to a local charity SMASH (Swindon Mentoring and Self Help) who provide one to one mentoring to young people who need additional support for whatever reason. As a father of two I know how difficult it is for young people to deal with life in general these days and if you don't have that support I can only imagine how bad things can get. I am hoping that the independent help and advice I can give will make a difference and I shall be applying to become a mentor and undertake the training necessary shortly. I am really looking forward to it, although with some trepidation. I'll let you know how things work out!

The main point, however, is actually a selfish one. I want to be mentally ready for retirement, and volunteering now to become involved in mentoring should give me additional skills and direction to cope with the changes that I know await me down the line."
