What's the challenge?

Mayfield Nurseries is a horticultural subsidary of Solent Mind, working with people enduring mental health problems, people with disabilities and older people with dementia.

Zurich has supported Mayfield Nurseries for several years, there is always something to be done from moving soil to repotting plants. 

If you are an individual or a small team of up to four people, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get involved in Challenge 2018.

What's the challenge?

YMCA Fairthorne Group is a registered charity who are proud to be part of the longest-running youth                                                   charity in the world.

Their mission is to champion and add value to young lives by providing experiences that challenge, enable and develop the individual.

YMCA Fairthorne Group is situated on a site of 111 acres. There is always something to be done such as creating pathways to enable better access for disabled members. In return for a mornings hard graft, you will be rewarded with an afternoon of team building as a thank you. Are you brave enough to climb the high ropes or can you work as a team to build a raft?

Second Chance

What's the challenge?

Second Chance are a children's charity working in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas.  The children they work with may have been abused sexually, physically or mentally. They may come from a poverty-stricken background or they may have learning difficulties. Some may have all three situations thrust upon them at the same time!

Website

They own approximately 40 acres of nature reserve. This is used to work with the children to teach them skills such as fishing, and take part in other leisure activities. They are looking for a team to get stuck in with: gardening, construction of pollytunnels, organising resources, prepping shop area, weeding...the list goes on!

Youth Options

What's the challenge?

Youth Options are a youth charity who work with children and young people, to provide opportunities to improve their emotional and social wellbeing. 

They offer educational workshops, engagement activities, positive role models, opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in a variety of areas. Photos >

Youth Options Outdoor Learning Centre is a 3.16 acre site on Bishopstoke Road in Eastleigh. They have numerous elements, which they would love a team to help with such as: stripping twigs off branches, assist with shelter building, clean & clear the polytunnels, build raised fire pits to maintain the safety when lighting fire for bushcraft activities. 

There are plenty of other jobs to be done here too, whether you are looking a physical challenge or just some light duties.

Shepherds Down School

What's the challenge?

Shepherds Down school in Compton provides education and support for 113 children aged 4 - 11 years with complex learning needs. Photos >

The school is set in three acres of grounds that need constant attention. They have a lovely woodland walk and it is wheelchair friendly, but they have to constantly keep the trees bushes and weeds under control. 

They would love a team to spend the day copping numerous hazel clumps and if the team is large enough they also have the wooden walkway and benches that need re-painting as well as the need to clear near fences, put down membrane and cover in the wood chippings provided.

Step by Step

What's the challenge?

At Step by Step they support young people from 11-25 who are going through hard times.  They take a unique step by step approach, providing accommodation, personal development opportunities and specialist support services.  Their approach helps young people to identify and fulfil their aspirations. Their core mission is to empower young people and prevent homelessness.

They would love a team to complete a garden makeover at Krystal House in Havant, an accommodation Foyer for young people who are facing homelessness in the local area. 

It's currently a blank canvas so they would like a team to set up a planting area, create a BBQ area and repaint the wall. The brief is "low maintenance but appealing" Can you help?

Southern Domestic Abuse Service

What's the challenge?

Southern Domestic Abuse Service provides services to people who have experienced or who are experiencing emotional, physical or sexual abuse in their relationships. They run refuges and also offer outreach to families not staying in the refuge but who are still in need of advice, support and information. Photos >

They would really like a team to give their garden at the Refuge a make over. They have a beautiful large garden with trees and bushes but would love to have a designated children's adventure play area with big tyres to play on and a wooden wendy house and painted garden wall. They would like an area for planting and growing as well as some wooden benches  and tables for families to enjoy the outdoor space.
 
As they are an all womens refuge, they would need to be made aware of any males working in the building so that they can inform the ladies. They are also a confidential address so this will be given out if the challenged gets accepted. 100% matching is available for this challenge to really help make a difference.

The Society of St James (SSJ) 

What's the challenge?

The Society of St James (SSJ) is a registered charity and a registered provider of social housing. They provide a wide range of support and accommodation to help people experiencing homelessness, substance misuse problems and mental health problems. They run community programmes to help people address their substance use, they have a care home for older people who have alcohol dependency problems and now require additional care they provide hostels for homeless adults and young people and also have some accommodation to help homeless families. Southampton Street Intensive Support Homeless Hostel houses 26 very vulnerable individuals, many with serious drug and alcohol problems. The hostel is a four storey building and has a residents garden at the rear.

They would really like a team to give it a makeover for the summer. They often have BBQs in the summer and the garden is a popular part of the provision.

What's the challenge?

Heathfield Primary School in Fareham is a school that caters for children with a wide range of difficulties including speech and language delay; social and emotional; autism. Photos >

Their nurture room has a very small courtyard which was cultivated by Zurich many years ago. The nurture team would like the area to be changed into part garden area and part paved area, so the children can access a variety of activities when outside in that space. 

Their wish is for a garden area, seating area and play area. Some plants and money is available to help with the completion of this challenge.
