The Nelson Trust 

What's the challenge?

The Nelson Trust brings self-belief, hope and long term recovery to individuals and families affected by addiction. They believe that anyone can recover from addiction with the right support from the right people. The Nelson Trust's 'Hub for Recovery' services creates space for people to recover from their addictions and the majority of their volunteers at these venues are people in recovery. Through the project they are able to gain the life skills, training and experience required to help them return to long term, paid employment.

The Sober Parrot is The Nelson Trust's latest community enterprise and will be Cheltenham’s first late night free live entertainment venue with a strictly alcohol free offering. The Nelson Trust would like your team to get involved in this exciting venture with you being part of their team for a day. Get to know some of the Hub volunteers and help with the finishing touches to get the building ready for opening and, importantly, get the word out that they are open for business! They will provide your team with whatever you feel you need to market the Sober Parrot to the people of Cheltenham ie tasters and marketing materials to be distributed around Cheltenham Town Centre.

Caring for Communities and People (CCP)

What's the challenge?

CCP exists to transform the lives of children, young people, families and vulnerable adults by preventing homelessness, strengthening families and promoting independence.

CCP would like your team to provide as many Moving In boxes as possible. They aim to give every CCP resident one upon entry to its Foyer accommodation. Many teenagers are forced out of their family home at the age of 16 and typically arrive at CCP with no personal possessions other than the clothes they are wearing. The starter pack, which includes two pillows, a duvet, towels, alarm clock and toiletries, costs approximately £65 per box. This challenge can be booked by more than 1 team.

Caring for Communities and People (CCP)

What's the challenge?

CCP exists to transform the lives of children, young people, families and vulnerable adults by preventing homelessness, strengthening families and promoting independence.

CCP challenge your team to provide boxes for: boys, girls and unisex in the following age groups 0-3 Months, 3- 6 Months and 6+ Months. They will be given to those vulnerable and economically disadvantaged young parents who most need CCP's support. Depending on the age group, the boxes should include nappies, wet wipes, cotton wool, vests, sleep suits, mittens, hat, baby wipes,  muslins, baby blankets and a large plastic storage box (ideal for storing the items in). These boxes are a really important aspect of contributing to giving a child the best start in life. This challenge can be booked by more than one team.

009 Fruits of your labour

Greenwood's Therapeutic Horticulture

What's the challenge?

Greenwood's in Bushley (Near Tewkesbury) works with disabled children, from 4-10 years of age, through the media of gardening, small farm animals and rural activities to provide therapeutic respite, throughout the year. 

This is run between two sites.

In September/October, engage in fruit picking for a day in Greenwoods Cider fruit orchards. The fruit will then be sold to raise much needed funds for the project. Your challenge is to pick up to 5-7 tonnes of fruit in a day!

010 Ride for Ryder!

Sue Ryder - Leckhampton Court Hospice

What's the challenge?

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court is the local hospice for people over 18 years, who are dying from conditions like cancer, heart failure and lung disease.

Sue Ryder celebrates their 30th anniversary with Ride for Ryder on Sunday 24th June. They’d love a team to help them set up on the Weds 20th or Thurs 21st June from 10am.

The cycle route now includes a loop of the hospice grounds. To help celebrate their birthday they'd love for a group of volunteers to help decorate the grounds with a range of items to welcome their riders through. If your team would assist with purchasing bespoke items to include special large branded balloons that would really help too.
If you can help on the Sunday, roles also include meet & greet, marshalling, manning a water station and generally making sure all the Sue Ryder supporters feel valued.   

011 Make it a night to remember...

Sue Ryder would like help to ensure the "Starlight Hike - A Night to Remember" takes place with a big party atmosphere. It's an amazing and moving opportunity for people to remember their loved ones  

This year it will be sponsored by Capita and will take place on Saturday 20th October.   There are many opportunities for you to get involved including marshalling, venue support and manning cheer stations etc that can work to any size group.

Footsteps Counselling and Care 

What's the challenge?

Footsteps Counselling and Care provides counselling support for anyone in Gloucestershire affected by pregnancy related issues. This includes the loss of a baby for any reason, and at any time, including miscarriage, termination, stillbirth and neonatal death.

They would love your team to organise a mini street party outside their shop with music, a stall from their shop, a cake sale and ... maybe some face painting? It's down to you! They would also like to involve their neighbouring businesses who they are sure would participate too. This could be a small event or as big as you wish to make it - Footsteps really are open to your suggestions!

Family Space

What's the challenge?

Family Space offers a helping hand with the ups and downs of family life. They provide a child contact centre to enable children to spend time with a parent no longer at home due to family separation. 

They also offer invaluable services in the community giving support to mums and dads helping them to build confidence and learn new parenting skills to ensure local children are more likely to grow up in a safer and more secure environment.

Website

Family Space runs activities for parents and children to engage together. Over the school holidays they often provide activities for parents and children to do together at home. This summer they would like to offer cookery packs for children to cook at home with their parents. They would like your team to provide up to 100 boxes of cake or cookie mix (some dairy free) so that each child they engage with over the holiday period can have the opportunity to take a box home and cook with their parent.

Winston's Wish

What's the challenge?

Winston's Wish were the UK’s first childhood bereavement charity – supporting bereaved children since 1992.   As the first charity to establish child bereavement support services in the UK, they continue to lead the way in providing specialist child bereavement support services across the UK, including in-depth therapeutic help in individual, group and residential settings.

The Cheltenham Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 30 September 2018 from 8am - 1pm. The marathon is set in the heart of this beautiful regency town and has been designed to show off its splendour and Cotswold charm.  Winston's Wish would love it if you could cheer on Team Winston runners either at the water stations or in the Race Village. 

How about you join their supporters at the charity marquee-stand? If you're up for it there's even a Winston Bear suit you can climb into and delight every child who spots you!
