Birmingham Settlement

What's the challenge?

Birmingham Settlement is one of the oldest charities in the city. For over 100 years, they have helped the people of Birmingham overcome the challenges they face, giving people advice, support and access to activities and training to help them achieve their goals and live happier lives.

Birmingham Settlement supports the community with; older people’s services, children and young people’s services, training and employment advice, money advice and development support for community organisations.

Birmingham Settlement would love a team to run a day trip for members sometime in July or August. In particular members have said they would like to visit new towns or the seaside. They would love a Challenge Team to help them plan and facilitate a day trip, attend on the day and help make the day happen.

They would need to hire a coach - members themselves will be asked to contribute £10 per person towards the trip, which should cover most of the cost of the coach. They would love the Challenge Team to raise funds to help cover the other costs of the trip. This might include entrance fees, if applicable or if there are no entrance fees to cover, the challenge could include arranging an Ageing Well picnic for lunch to bring everyone together. They anticipate that about 30 members would take part in the trip.

Members will be asked to vote on which trip they want to go on. Examples of possible trips are:

  • Seaside – location tbc,
  • Bridgenorth and the Bridgenorth Cliff Railway – Entrance fee none, railway ticket £1.60 return and group discounts available.
  • Stratford with Sight Seeing Bus Tour £11.90 pp

Some of the Ageing Well members have limited mobility so a trip will need to be planned that does not involve them standing up or walking around all day, and also has an indoor space in case of bad weather.

The Challenge Team will be required to:

  • Raise funds (circa £150) to help cover the cost of the trip
  • Research and book a coach from the centre in Aston to the location to be decided by Ageing Well members
  • Chaperone the trip
  • Purchase items for, and help facilitate, an Ageing Well picnic for lunch (if requested by members – costs to come out of the £150 raised)
