Brexit: Zurich launches Green Card portal for car insurance customers

Portal allows motor customers to request a Green Card be emailed to them for printing or sent in post

Zurich car insurance customers can request Green Cards directly from the insurer via a simple online portal, as research suggests more than half of motorists do not realise they must carry one if the UK leaves the European Union without a deal.

The easy-to-use portal – available at greencard.zurich.co.uk – allows motor customers to request a Green Card, or multiple cards, to be emailed to them for printing, or posted out to them.

It comes as research commissioned by the British Insurance Brokers’ Association and the Association of British Insurers suggests that 55% do not realise they must carry a motor insurance Green Card when driving abroad in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Meanwhile, only a third of respondents had heard of a motor insurance Green Card and just 37% knew they needed to obtain one. Finally, 20% of respondents failed to identify that they will need a valid driving licence to legally drive to the EU following a no-deal Brexit.

The legal requirements of the Green Card system mean anyone driving abroad under a UK insurance policy must carry a physical Green Card. If you intend to tow a trailer or caravan, you must also have a separate Green Card for that. Green Cards will also be required to drive into the Republic of Ireland.

If you have any questions or want to know more, you’ll find Q&As on the website at zurich.co.uk/brexit, or you can visit the Zurich Green Card portal.
