Brexit – Green Card FAQs

The UK left the European Union on 31 January 2020 and is now in the transition period whilst the UK and the European Union negotiate a new relationship. During this period the UK-EU trading relationship remains the same and Green Cards will not be required for driving in the EU.

What is the transition period?

This is a period of time (31 January to 31 December 2020) in which the UK-EU relationship doesn’t change. The trading relationship will remain the same and the UK continues to follow EU rules. This provides time to negotiate the new UK-EU relationship for 2021 onwards.

Will I need a Green Card during the transition period?

No, you can continue to drive in the EU without a Green Card. A valid Certificate of Insurance will cover you driving in the EU area.

Will I need a Green Card after the transition period?

Possibly depending on the negotiations of the new UK-EU relationship. We will continue to monitor this closely and if Green Cards may be required after 31 December 2020 we will re-launch our Green Card portal in October 2020.

How do I get a Green Card?

You can apply for a Green Card using our Green Card portal which will be available from October 2020, subject to the negotiations of the new UK-EU relationship.

I have been sent a Green Card, what do I need to do with it?
