Coronavirus - Car and Home insurance update

Here to help you

We know this is an unsettling time for everyone and we are closely monitoring the Coronavirus outbreak.

We have activated our business continuity plans and our employees across our teams are all working from home with no interruption in our service to you. We are striving to establish new ways of working with our suppliers to ensure we are there for you when you need us. We are here to support you and have created this page to answer any questions you might have.

Will I be able to renew my policy?

Yes. Our customer service teams are available as normal and we are working with our brokers to ensure renewal invitations are issued as normal and in good time. If you haven't received your renewal invitation, please speak to your broker or your usual contact at Zurich.

I have lost my job or I am experiencing financial difficulties due to the Coronavirus outbreak and am worried about paying for my insurance. How can you help?

We are encouraging Zurich customers to speak to your broker or your usual contact at Zurich and we will be able to discuss this with you.

How do I obtain a cover note or revised documentation if I need to make changes to my policy?

Our customer service teams are available as normal, and we are working with our brokers to ensure any documents you need are issued in a timely fashion. If you have any concerns, please speak to your broker or your usual contact at Zurich.

I am an office-based worker and I need to work from home because of government advice or because I need to self-isolate. Am I covered under my home insurance?

Yes. You do not need to tell us if you are now doing office-based (clerical) work from home.

Our standard home policy provides cover for office equipment owned by you, as standard. Any equipment owned by your employer should be insured by the employer, under their own policy.

If you are doing other work, which is not office-based at home due to the Coronavirus outbreak, please speak to your broker or your usual contact at Zurich.

If I am unable to return home due to travel restrictions or my home becomes unoccupied because I have contracted coronavirus and need to self-isolate elsewhere, what does this mean for my home insurance cover?

You are covered. We recognise that with the country in lockdown it may be difficult for you or your family to make the normal arrangements for regular visits if your home is unoccupied. Because of this, we will maintain cover beyond the normal 60-day limit. If your home does become unoccupied, please advise your broker or your usual contact at Zurich as soon as you are able to do so.

If I need to drive to work instead of getting public transport because of the impact of Coronavirus, will my motor insurance cover this?

Yes. If you have to use your car to commute to your normal place of work or to more than one place of work or study due to coronavirus, you do not need to contact us as we will cover this as standard.

I am a key worker and I need to use my own car to drive to different places of work will this be covered?

Firstly, thank you for the amazing work you do and yes you are covered. If you have to use your car to commute to your normal place of work or to more than one place of work or study due to coronavirus, you do not need to contact us as we will cover this as standard.

I am volunteering during this time and using my car to help others. Does my car insurance cover this, and do I need to tell you?

Yes, you are covered and no you do not need to tell us about using your car for voluntary purposes. Thank you for volunteering to support our communities. Please note Zurich can only cover voluntary purposes, and your policy does not cover using your car for other purposes which you are paid for (e.g. takeaway delivery driving).

I am not receiving pay, have been furloughed, or I am self-employed and not working due to Coronavirus, what do I need to do?

You do not need to advise us if you are temporarily unemployed or not currently working. If you do advise your broker or your usual contact at Zurich, we will note this, but we will not alter the occupation recorded on your policy.

If you have a Zurich car policy, and not working means you are driving less, you may want to consider asking us to change the estimated mileage on your policy.

I have become unemployed due to Coronavirus, does this affect my policy or premium?

If you advise your broker or your usual contact at Zurich, we may update the policy record depending on when your policy is due for renewal, but we will not charge you for this change.

If you have a Zurich car policy, and not working means you are driving less, you may want to consider asking us to change the estimated mileage on your policy.

I am driving less due to the Coronavirus outbreak, what should I do?

Please speak to your broker or your usual contact at Zurich to update your policy details. If this change results in a lower price, we will refund you. Sometimes this change can lead to a higher price, if this happens, we will waive any additional charge.

I am driving more due to the Coronavirus outbreak, what should I do? If you expect to drive more due to the current Coronavirus outbreak, you do not need to contact us, and this will be covered under the policy.

If the increase in your planned mileage is not related to the current Coronavirus outbreak, please speak to your broker or your usual contact at Zurich to update your policy details.

I am unable to use my car due to the current Coronavirus outbreak, can I lay up my car and reduce the cover or price of my policy?

We only offer comprehensive car insurance cover and are unable to accommodate requests for laid-up cover, including when vehicles have been declared SORN. However, if you expect to be driving less, please contact your broker or your usual contact at Zurich about adjusting the estimated annual mileage on your policy. If this change results in a lower price, we will refund you.

I want to use my own car to do delivery work for the local takeaway or for platforms such as Just Eat, Deliveroo, etc. Is this covered under my policy, or can I add this cover?

If you are working purely on a voluntary basis to deliver food or groceries to vulnerable people in the community, this is covered. However, if you are taking paid employment, either as a temporary or permanent member of staff and are required to use your own car for deliveries, this is not covered and you will either need cover from your employer, or you will need to arrange an additional insurance policy to cover this.

We would suggest first speaking to your prospective employer to see if they provide this insurance cover. If they do not provide this, you can speak to your broker about this or, if you are our direct customer, there are specialist covers available online. If you are working casually and paid by the load or delivery, you will need to arrange cover for the “carriage of goods for Hire and Reward”. This is not cover we offer, but top-up covers are available, please speak to your broker or, if you are a direct customer, check online.

I need to renew my vehicle MOT but due to the coronavirus outbreak I’m unable to do this. Does this affect my car insurance policy?

The government has announced that existing MOT certificates are being extended for cars, vans and motorcycles for 6 months from 30th March. In regard to your Zurich car insurance policy, it is not a condition of our policy to have a MOT certificate, although policy conditions require that you take reasonable care to maintain the vehicle in a safe and roadworthy condition. We do not routinely ask for sight of an MOT when we handle claims, unless we have reason to believe the car may not have been roadworthy and that this may have caused or contributed to the accident or its severity.

I have travelled overseas with my car but due to quarantine measures I have had to extend my stay. What does this mean for my car insurance policy?

Provided you were not planning to stay for more than 60 days, and any extension is purely a result of the restriction applied due to the Coronavirus outbreak, this is outside of your control and we will maintain cover until you return to the UK with your car, for no charge.

I need to add an additional driver to use my car during the Coronavirus outbreak (e.g. because I am self-isolating) can I do this?

Yes. Please speak to your broker or your usual contact in Zurich who can help with any changes you need to make to your policy.

I've had a claim and you've treated my car as a "total loss” and agreed that I can keep the car, and have it repaired. I was given 42 days to do this to keep my policy in force, but due to the Coronavirus outbreak, I am struggling to get the necessary repairs and inspection completed on time. What should I do?

Please speak to your broker or your usual contract at Zurich, providing full details so we can consider your individual circumstances. We will need to ensure any safety critical vehicle parts are fully repaired before the vehicle is safe to drive and the car is assessed by a qualified independent motor engineer after the repairs have been completed to ensure it is roadworthy.
