John Spellar MP meets Zurich volunteers bringing careers advice to the classroom
Birmingham, June 15, 2018
Warley MP John Spellar went back to school today to see Zurich volunteers in action delivering a careers workshop for Smethwick students.
At the visit on 15 June, John had the opportunity to meet Year 12 students from Holly Lodge High School studying STEM subjects. He witnessed Zurich volunteers sharing their tips on how to write a good CV and providing careers advice on opportunities within the insurance industry. Students also put questions to the Zurich experts on a range of topics related to the world of work including how to get your foot on the career ladder and how to build a successful career.
John Spellar MP said, “I enjoyed watching the volunteers in action and seeing first hand the real difference it made to the students getting careers advice from people already working in business. I’d urge more employers to follow Zurich’s lead by getting involved in school partnership programmes, equipping youngsters with practical skills, helping to raise their aspirations beyond the classroom and letting them know how to apply for a job in this industry.”
Sophie Timms, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Zurich UK said, “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to invite the school’s local MP along to see our volunteers in action. We’re proud of our partnership with Holly Lodge High School and as a local employer to be able to give something back to the community is very rewarding for our employees.
Our work with Holly Lodge is part of our broader Youth Skills programme which offers careers advice and financial literacy support to students across the UK”.
We’ve already helped over a thousand students since launching the programme less than two years ago and are always looking for new ways we can inspire more young people to consider a career in insurance”.
Jim Walker, Leader of Learning for Business, Law and Enterprise, Holly Lodge High School, comments. “In our experience, we find that bringing in business experts to provide careers advice and talk about employment opportunities is a great way of engaging our students to think about their future career paths. We’re delighted that John has been able to see for himself the benefits of working in partnership with a local employer like Zurich. We look forward to further success as more students benefit from their support in the coming months.
