Our programme

Our £1.1 million programme was started in 2006 when the focus was to support families where there is a mental health issue.

We only accept applications from those who have been invited to apply, and DO NOT accept ad hoc applications

During a review of the programme in 2008, the focus was refined to support children and young people with mental health problems - and in preventative and early intervention work.  By putting in interventions at an early stage you can change their whole lives.

Phase 1 - partner of the 2006 Observer Christmas Appeal

The public donations from Sunday newspaper, The Observer, Christmas Appeal, together with matching from the Zurich Community Trust, committed £80,000 to work with the following charities:

  • The Place2Be - £40,000 to work inside schools to improve the emotional wellbeing of children, their families and the whole school community.
  • Family Action - £30,000 to the Building Bridges project in Greenwich to fund a family worker where a parent has a mental health problem, and to fund a part-time Family Worker in Edenbridge, Kent.
  • Rethink - £10,000 to the Big Safe House in Southampton to provide support for young people.

Phase 3

This next phase of the programme will focus on projects supporting children and young people with mental health issues.  In particular, the focus is on supporting prevention and early intervention projects.

The Prince's Trust - £303,000 over 3 years to introduce an emotional wellbeing aspect into their flagship Team programme, which supports unemployed and disadvantaged young people aged 16-25.

Our funding will enable the introduction of placements for social work students on the Working for Wellbeing project.

The Mental Health Foundation - around £135,000 over 3 years to set up and host a coalition of charities supporting children and young people with mental health issues.  The aim is to work together to create one single voice to lobby for change.
