Addaction is the UK's leading drugs and alcohol treatment charity, and is the lead partner on this £1.8 million programme.
In 2005, three pilot projects were set up in Cumbria, Tower Hamlets in London and in Derby. These diverse areas have been chosen to address the different issues facing rural communities, urban inner city and suburban city areas.
This four year pilot programme used an innovative approach to tackle the impact of drug and alcohol addiction within the family, especially on children.

Recent funding
Based on the positive outcomes attained by the pilot schemes in Derby, Tower Hamlets and Cumbria, in 2009, the Zurich Community Trust awarded a grant of £226,000 to the three schemes for them to sustain and develop their services.
In July 2010 the Zurich Community Trust decided to extend our funding with a further £600,000 as commitment to our ongoing partnership and to enable Addaction to expand the programme.
Breaking the Cycle (BtC) will now become the focus of Addaction's Fundraising Appeal for the next three years with the aim of the charity seeking a further £600,000 in voluntary funds to match our own investment.
The emphasis of this new stage is on extending the programme through replication of the Breaking the Cycle 'model' and encouraging sustainability. Addaction aims to have set up 23 Breaking the Cycle projects by 2015.
