Thank you for supporting the Trust in 2011

Chris Gillies"I am delighted to share with you the key achievements of Zurich Community Trust in 2011.  Your Trust delivers fantastic work and I continue to be impressed at the positive impact that the Trust programmes make in the UK and overseas.  Last year was no exception.

As you know, grant-making is only part of the story.  The rest is down to the amazing commitment shown by so many Zurich and Capita volunteers and fundraisers, who make a real difference to charities and peoples' lives.

This year I am particularly keen to express my gratitude, and admiration, for all your hard work.   After ten humbling and inspiring years, this will be my last message as Chair of Zurich Community Trust.  Tim Culling, UK Operations Director, European & International Hub, Global Life and Trustee on the Zurich Community Trust Board, will now take over the role, so I leave you in very safe hands.  I very much look forward to supporting Tim, as I will continue to serve as a Trustee, and I know that he will do a great job.

Thank you all again for making not just 2011, but every single one of the last ten years, so special and for everything you do to support the Trust. It is so appreciated."   Chris Gillies, Chair, Zurich Community Trust (UK) Ltd Chief Growth Officer, Global Life

raised

  • Despite the tough economic climate, it means that Zurich employees generously donated over £80 per capita per month - the same level as in 2010. Thank you!
  • A total of 23.45% of you currently support Zurich Cares through Give As You Earn.  This positions Zurich as one of the top companies as regards payroll giving in the private sector.

GRANT-MAKING
2011 proved to be a particularly busy year for Zurich Cares charity committees up and down the country.  An amazing total of £850,000 was given out to charities through our local, regional, national and overseas grants programmes, all run by Zurich volunteers.

  • Over 72% of our local grants spend now supports core costs (something charities desperately need)
  • 48 local charity partnerships with multi-year funding have now been established by our key locations.  This is in direct response to a request from our charity partners for ongoing dependable funding, enabling charities to protect and provide those vital services which may be at risk due to funding cuts.
  • Over 1500 of you voted for a new Zurich Cares national partner, with CLIC Sargent emerging the winner, to join Marie Curie Cancer and Hope and Homes for Children.

VOLUNTEERING
Zurich and Capita employees were also generous with their time. You volunteered your energy, enthusiasm and business skills to donate a total of 5,916 days, up from 5,500 in 2010.

Transformation Programmes

The Trust Transformation programmes focus on challenging social issues that are often overlooked. Funded wholly from the annual business donation to the Trust these programmes look to make a lasting, sustainable difference. Some highlights from 2011 are:

A CALL IN TIME
129 Zurich volunteers are now engaged in the programme and Wilkinsons, Bloomberg, and CarPhone Warehouse have become new corporate partners for the scheme.

129 Zurich volunteer callers

  • Prudential renewed their partnership. At the end of 2011, there were around 400 employee volunteers calling in total (including Zurich volunteers)
  • IT Systems implemented and now being rolled out to all volunteers.
  • Awarded accreditation from the Mentoring and Befriending Association for best practice in telephone befriending.

Breaking the Cycle (BTC)
1.3 million children in Britain are growing up with at least one parent who has a significant drink or drug problem - that is 1 in 10 children.

BTC project introduced to 10 new sites.

  • BTC works holistically with families where drug and alcohol misuse is an issue and has made a significant positive difference to the lives of over 700 families.
  • In 2011, the BTC project rolled out to 10 new sites
  • BTC Commission report was finalised and will be launched at a House of Commons event in March.

Young People’s Mental Health Programme
At any one time, 1 in 10 children and young people have a  diagnosable mental health problem. Addressing issues early helps individuals and society – that message needs a powerful voice.

Involving young people

  • The Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) brings together leading charities to campaign jointly on the mental health and wellbeing of young people in the UK. In 2011 CYPMHC responded to 10 Government consultations.

    The Coalition also:
  • included Children and Young People in the Mental Health Strategy 'No Health Without Mental Health' for the very first time. This was as a result of lobbying by the coalition.
  • Held fringe meetings at Party Political Conferences and involved young people in the consultation process.

We also extended our work with partners The Prince's Trust and Place2Be; 2011 saw The Prince's Trust establish Mental Health First Aid training as a minimum standard for all their frontline staff.

INDIA PROGRAMME
5 assignees went to India to share their skills with our India partners.

"I think we should recognise how progressive Zurich is as an organisation to offer staff development opportunities such as these." Tim Fenton, UK Life Tax Director who, for one month, worked with the management team of The Banyan, a non-governmental organisation specialising in the care of the destitute mentally ill.

A huge Thank You for the part you play in making all of this happen.
