Inside your home
Flood water rises rapidly when it breaches your home through any available route. A basic plan of action can help reduce the damage or loss of your most cherished possessions.
Remember to:
- Turn off your electricity, gas and main water supplies
- Move as many possessions as possible (especially expensive, electrical or sentimental items) to upper floors or to high places within the house. Avoid leaving perishables on the floor. Photo's are very susceptible to water damage
- Empty cabinets and drawers that cannot easily be moved and place contents out of harm's way
- Weigh down or tie furniture together that cannot easily be moved. This helps prevent things floating about and damaging other belongings
- Disconnect appliances such as washing machines, gas cookers and dishwashers connected by rigid pipes to the mains supply
- Drains and toilets can let in flood water, so block sinks and baths with a weighed down plug. Outlets for dishwashers and washing machines should be blocked and a sandbag placed in the toilet bowl
- Remove curtains. If this is not possible, lift them over the curtain pole to keep them clear of flood water
- Internal doors should be removed or left open
