Why flooding occurs

Floods are caused by a combination of events including prolonged and torrential rain or coastal storms. This can lead to run-off water and rivers, streams, ditches and sewers overflowing.

Even if you don't live near a river or the coast and don't believe you will ever be flooded, it is important to remember water can still enter your home from overflowing drains and sewers.

The average cost of a Zurich flood claim in 2007 was £35,000. Therefore,we believe it is important to help you reduce the risk to your home and for all homeowners to consider whether they need to take steps to prevent flooding and limit its damage.

The extent of damage to properties and possessions will vary depending on how much water enters the house and the depth of the water, but in any event there can be many side effects such as:

  • Loss of personal belongings
  • Financial cost of repairing or replacing belongings
  • Lengthy drying out process
  • Need to move into temporary accommodation
  • Damage to plants, sheds and external buildings
  • Impact on pets

This site is designed to help you consider the risk of your home flooding and the type of actions you can take to prevent or reduce the consequences.
