Risk assessment
The questions below will help you identify if your home is at risk:
- Does your home have a history of flooding?
- Have your neighbours' houses been flooded?
- How often does flooding occur?
- What was the maximum depth of previous floods?
- What was the duration of the previous floods?
- Are any new flood defence schemes planned, but not yet in place? The Environment Agency will provide flood defence locations that are active or planned in your area » more
- Have there been building developments close to your home recently?
- Are any local planning applications pending that may affect your property?
- Will the construction, age or build of your home make it more likely to flood?
In short, water will find any weaknesses, like cracks in brickwork, for example, to get in. However, much will depend on the duration of a flood and its depth, the kind of ground your property is built on and factors such as what your property adjoins.
There are a number of organisations you should contact to complete your assessment of the flood risk.
