Be prepared
Insurance, protection, flood advice
Don't wait for a flood to happen - be prepared now! In most cases there is not much time between a flood warning and the start of a flood.
It is important to have a 'flood plan' ready as a quick reference guide. This will vary for each person and property but it should include the following essential items. Important information, such as the contact numbers for:
- Emergency services
- Utility suppliers
- Your insurance company
A 'flood kit' should contain items to help you minimise the initial damage and keep you and your family safe and warm. Make sure you store it up high where it's less likely to get wet.
You could include:
- Basic tool kit
- Broom, spade, mop & bucket, scrubbing brushes, cloths
- Domestic detergent and disinfectant
- Rubber boots, gloves and protective clothing
- Waterproof torch and radio (with spare batteries)
- Bottled water for drinking
- Waterproof plasters for cuts.
- Mobile phone in case floods have put out landline telephone services
- Emergency long-life food supplies
- Camera to record damage to your home
Read your insurance documents to ensure your policy cover is adequate and contact your insurer or broker if you have any questions about any aspect of your insurance. Place your policy documents and important information in a waterproof bag.
