The Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland erupted again on Saturday 21st May and drifted South East into UK airspace on Tuesday 24th May causing severe disruption mainly to flights in and out of Scottish Airports. The regulatory framework governing access to UK airspace has changed since the eruption in 2010, allowing a more flexible approach to for the airlines.
For those passengers whose travel plans have been affected through flight cancellation, we can confirm that the travel policies issued by Zurich Municipal will provide indemnity for reasonable costs incurred, subject to normal policy terms and conditions, not covered by other means. European Regulations place certain responsibilities on airlines in such situations and they should be the initial organisation responsible for refunding costs, or providing assistance during a disrupted flight.
While the ash cloud is moving in an easterly direction, over Northern Europe, this situation could change quickly, again causing disruption to UK travellers.
