Notifiable Diseases and Nuclear Exclusions – cover clarification

Notifiable Diseases

The ongoing concern around potential outbreaks of globally transmitted diseases has been heightened in recent years, notably with outbreaks of both swine and avian flu.

As a response, Zurich have amended the wording of our notifiable disease extension applicable to Business Interruption cover so that customers can now clearly see exactly which ‘notifiable diseases’ are covered under the policy.

All of our customers who either extend their cover to include notifiable disease or where cover is provided automatically will benefit from the new wording, with full details of the revised wording shown in the endorsement attached to your Schedule.

Nuclear Exclusions

Risks associated with war and nuclear power have generally always been considered to be the responsibility of Government and have been excluded from commercial insurance policies.

Existing exclusions have not kept pace with technological developments and we have introduced changes to clarify that our policy does not cover any loss arising from nuclear weapons or devices.

Further, the exclusion applying to nuclear fuel and associated waste has also been amended to exclude contamination from radioactive matter. We will however continue to cover losses arising from contamination from radioactive isotopes used for peaceful activities which the exclusion will define this as commercial, agricultural, medical or other peaceful purposes.

If you have any queries regarding the changes to your policy please get in touch with your usual Zurich contact.
