At 10.30a.m. on Tuesday 23rd April at The Compleat Angler, Marlow, the Sir Steve Redgrave Charitable Trust will launch its Golden Jubilee Thames Walk in support of children.
The Walk will begin on 31st May and will be the first official event of the Trust, which was set up by Sir Steve in 2001 with the goal of raising £5 million over 5 years in support of nationwide community projects for disadvantaged and disabled children.
A dedicated team of 10 walkers will amble 175 miles along the banks of the Thames from the source at Cirencester down to St. Catherine's Dock in the City of London, where they will arrive on 12th June.
Each day, these 10 core walkers will begin their trek at 9.30a.m. from a participating pub on the Thames path. They will walk from 7 to 10 miles, stop at another pub for lunch, and then continue their journey until approximately 6.00p.m. each evening, when they'll land in another picturesque town along the river for supper and a good night's sleep.
Everyone is welcome to join the walkers and perhaps stride next to Sir Steve himself, who will join the team on several occasions throughout the Walk.
Sir Steve said, 'I'm very excited about this debut event, which honours the Queen's Jubilee while raising money for good causes. I know how much hard work will be needed to complete 175 miles, and I thank all the walkers in advance for their dedication'.
The Walk's official website offers full information about the Walk, a timetable, a list of participating pubs where other walkers can join in, and downloadable sponsorship forms. These forms can also be obtained from shops, Beefeater restaurants and specific pubs along the Thames Walk route. Please visit the website for these details.
The Trust is hugely grateful for the first donation from Zurich, a company which gives to charitable organisations as part of its mission to be socially responsible. Wallace Dobbin, Zurich's Director of Strategy, Marketing and Communications will present a cheque for £50,000 at the launch. He said, 'We have watched Sir Steve go from strength to strength in everything he does, and Zurich are proud to help him ensure the success of his Trust'.
