Sir Steve launches Thames walk with 50K gift from Zurich
30 April 2002 - Sir Steve Redgrave launched his Golden Jubilee Thames Walk on behalf of the Sir Steve Redgrave Charitable Trust, Tuesday, 23rd April at the Compleat Angler in Marlow. Sir Steve accepted a cheque for £50,000 in support of the walk from Wallace Dobbin, Director of Marketing and Communications at Zurich, and then led a symbolic jaunt across the Marlow Bridge.
The 175-mile trek from the source of the Thames at Cirencester to St Katherine's Dock in London will be completed by a team of 10 dedicated walkers from across the UK. Beginning May 31, the walkers start each day at 9.30 a.m., walking 7 to10 miles before stopping at a participating pub for lunch, then finishing for the night at around 6 p.m. The walk will end on 12 June after having wound through some of the most beautiful spots along the river. Sir Steve and other celebrity guests will occasionally swap oars for walking boots and join the team.
The walk is part of Sir Steve's bid to raise £5 million for disadvantaged and disabled children's charities over the next 5 years.
The public is invited to join the walk at any stage along the route as a sponsored participant, or to join in the Marlow Fun Day on 8 June, an activity-packed event for families.
