Joining Earthwatch in 1994. Participating in their Corporate Environmental Responsibility Group.
Receiving the UK Energy Information Centre's Edinburgh Crystal Award in 1996 for achievement in energy management, conservation and purchasing.
Winning Cheltenham Borough Council's award for Bike to Work Day in 1988 for providing our cyclists with improved facilities.
Signing up to the Government's initiative of Making a Corporate Commitment in 1992. In July 2001, we started to participate in their initiative (MACC2 for short), which was a top-level commitment to setting quantified targets for improving resource efficiency and environmental performance.
Publishing annual reports from 2001 onwards about our environmental activity (see Report 2001).
Being awarded the Commuter Initiative Award 2004 for the Private Sector, by the Association for Commuter Transport (ACT). Zurich is the first financial services company to win this award, presented by David Jamieson, MP.
Reducing electric and gas consumption by 1% annually until 2010 and cutting carbon dioxide emissions from electricity and gas energy by 20% for the major sites in our property portfolio (100kw+) in the period 1999-2004. To this end, from 1/1/05 all our buildings on the UK mainland are being supplied by "green electricity" from a variety of renewable sources.
