Local exhaust ventilation equipment

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 (as amended), businesses are legally obliged to assess and control the exposure of hazardous materials to their workforce, contractors and visitors to their premises.

One method of controlling hazardous substances may be to install a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system.

How can we help your business comply

Our surveyors’ detailed knowledge of LEV systems design and operation enables them to identify any potential faults or weaknesses. In line with the statutory inspection requirements and Health and Safety Executive guidance* our engineer surveyors carry out thorough visual examinations, focusing on safety critical components.

Case studies

The following incidents are real and taken from the Health and Safety Executive:-

Employees were exposed to harmful dichlormethane vapours when using pressurised spray adhesives in an open workshop with no LEV or RPE (respiratory protective equipment). This occurred over a lengthy period of more than four years. Evidence was obtained to prove that at least three of the employees have suffered ill health as a result of this exposure.

Several employees were affected by carbon monoxide from a LPG forklift operating in an enclosed packing department. The company had identified this hazard but failed to carry out an assessment and implement controls to prevent or adequately control the exposure to this hazardous substance.
