Why should I choose Zurich Engineering for inspections and technical services?

Zurich Engineering is over 100 years old and we have a long and proud history of delivering the highest standards of service and safety. As a board member of SAFed (the Safety Federation) we help to shape our industry and ensure the continued safety of our customers and the public.

Strengthening safety through partnership

Our partnership with Associated British Ports (ABP) demonstrates how Zurich Engineering helps maintain safety and reliability at one of the UK’s busiest ports.

At the Port of Immingham, our on-site Engineer Surveyor, Ben Johnson, plays a key role in keeping operations running smoothly, inspecting everything from cranes to forklifts across the Humber region.

But it’s more than inspections. It’s about trust, collaboration, and being there when it matters most.

Learn why ABP’s Group Technical Authority chose Zurich and the value they see in working with us to maintain high safety standards at one of the UK’s busiest ports.

ABP is the UK’s largest port operator. We’ve got 21 ports across the UK ranging from Plymouth in the south to Troon in the north.

Hi, I’m Craig Walker, I’m the Group Technical Authority for ABP for the mechanical engineering discipline and I look after the inspection contract. In the Humber where we are today, which is part of the UK’s largest port complex we’ve got ship to shore cranes, material handling cranes, we’ve got the world’s largest material handing crane in the Mantsinen 300M.

For our inspection contract we needed a trusted partner we have the requisite skills in port inspection equipment, but also that had the technical accolade to deal with the more complex equipment we’ve got and bespoke equipment and Zurich were are trusted partner to ensure that we stay safe and compliant.

Hi, my name is Ben. I’ve been with Zurich Engineering now for six years. I’ve got 20 years’ experience within the inspection business.

Things we are looking for within the inspection are safety defects, i.e we’re looking for fractured welds, elongated chains, broken wires and anything what’s really going to affect the safety of that machine.

We take safety really seriously at ABP it’s our number one priority and ensuring our equipment is legally compliant and safe for continued use was a top priority.

Zurich and ABP work well together. As we plan the work together, we have designated operators for the machines and also share a office space. So, most equipment is inspected on a 6 or 12 monthly basis. We manage our own diaries, so we have the ability to see what’s coming up, what’s due for inspection ensuring that nothing goes over the due date. We are also a UCAS type A accredited inspection body.

Zurich bring a log of qualities to the table as our inspection provider but more than anything I would say peace of mind. They’ve got a team of really well trained engineers there service standard are consistently excellent and they are a safe pair of hands.
