Lady making a claim

How to claim

What to do if you’ve had a burglary

Coming home to find that someone has been in your home and stolen from you is a hugely traumatising experience. Here’s what you should do if such a thing happens to you:

  • First and foremost, phone the police. If you suspect that the burglar is still in your home, on no account enter the building.
  • Do not touch anything; you’ll only be tampering with forensic evidence. Leave that to the police who know exactly what to look for.
  • Once the police have left then go through your property room by room and make a list of everything that you think is missing or has been damaged.
  • Inform your bank straight away if any debit or credit cards or chequebooks have been taken. Likewise if your passport or driving licence is missing.
  • The police will give you a crime report number. It’s essential that you hold on to this as we will require it to process your claim.
  • Once all that’s been taken care of, contact us or get your broker to do it for you. You can reach us on 0870 010 8888.
  • You might need to secure your home if any windows or doors have been damaged during the break-in.
