What to do if your car breaks down
This quick guide should give you an idea of what sort of thing you need to do in the event of a breakdown:
- If you’re driving on the motorway and you think your car is on the point of breaking down, pull over onto the hard shoulder immediately.
- Switch on your hazard warning lights to warn other vehicles.
- When you get out of the car, do so via the passenger doors. Please don’t run the risk of being hit by traffic. Get your passengers to leave by the same way and keep them well away from the road.
- If you have a mobile phone on you, great. Call your breakdown company straight away. If you don’t, there’s no need to worry. Motorways have emergency telephones at regular intervals, all clearly marked with reference numbers so the breakdown service you’re calling will be able to find you easily.
- If you’ve taken out the option of Breakdown Assistance with us, the number to call is 0800 328 8740, or if you’re in the European Union, it’s 00 44 1274 658073.
- Then wait for help by the side of the road. Remember most breakdowns can be fixed on the spot and generally most emergency call-outs are answered within the hour.
