Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions:

Would I need to complete a proposal form in order to obtain a quotation ?

No, a simple presentation with all relevant information will suffice.

Do you provide cover for D&O ?

Yes. Please contact your Development Underwriter for more details.

Do you provide cover for Professional Indemnity ?

Yes. Please contact your Development Underwriter for more details.

Can you quote for an Employer Controlled Package or a Complete Project Package ?

Yes. Please contact your Development Underwriter for more details.

Can you assist in Health & Safety surveys or audits ?

Yes. Please contact your Development Underwriter for more details.

Do you write Engineering classes in isolation ?

Yes we can write Engineering classes in isolation as well as part of a combined package.

If I have a Property risk do I need to contact anyone other than Construction for a quotation ?

No, if the trade is construction then we write all lines of business in the Construction Centres i.e. Property, D & O etc.

Do you write Employer controlled project Contract Works?

Yes we can write single project Contract Works but we are selective and will not write every request. eg. where an existing building is part of the contract (redevelopment) the Insurers for the existing building are usually the most appropriate Insurer to approach for Contract Works cover.  We work very closely with our Property Investors unit to try and provide complete solutions for developers and property owners.  This is important because not all Property Insurers have the facility to write Contract Works.

Can you note the Interest of Banks and/or Funders where this is requested?

As construction specialists, we have come across most requests whether they are from funders, Employers or Contractors.  Noting a funders Interests is a common request  and one we have no problem with complying with .

What are JCT Contract Conditions?

The letters JCT are widely thrown about in the Construction Industry and stand for Joint Contracts Tribunal.  They are purely a set of contract conditions that have evolved over time to best distribute responsibility between contracting parties.  They are widely used but are not the only forms of contract we come across other examples such as ICE, NEC, MF1 etc.  The contract conditions are the most important indicator of what level of Insurance cover is required and whose responsibility it is to arrange it.  Therefore we place a high importance on understanding the conditions in place and ultimately it allows us to price cover effectively.

What are continuing Hire Charges?

When an item of hired-in plant is lost or stolen and becomes the subject of a material damage claim, Insurers will settle the loss usually with the hire company for the item lost or damaged.  However if the item was due to be returned to the hire-company in the next few days and as a result of the loss it takes a month to settle the claim, the hire company will expect compensation for the loss of hire revenue from hiring out that item.  We call this continuing hire charges and provide cover for a set period usually 3 months with a monetary limit to reflect what the potential cost could be for the 3 months.

What is the difference between Contracting Turnover & Total Turnover?

Many presentations we see include Property & Liability covers and obviously we need to know a companies overall turnover.  However from a Contract Works point of view we are only concerned with contracting turnover because this is the only exposure we have.  If for example the client has a revenue of £1,000,000 from hiring out plant, £3,000,000 from land sales or £2,500,000 from manufacture & supply only these are not what we class as contracting turnover.  We rate only on contracting turnover which means we do not overcharge by including turnover which is attributable to other activities outside Contract Works cover.
